People With Developmental Disabilities
Services for people with developmental disabilities and/or those who are dually-diagnosed, include support and training to enable people to live their lives as independently as possible. Each person who chooses Alternatives has a service plan designed to meet his/her needs. People receive support services, based on their level of need, in Group Homes, the Emergency Capacity Systems Program, Supervised Apartments, Supportive Housing, Supportive Living, or the Parenting Program. Each program receives supports from the Clinical Services Department. Employment Services and Recreation are available to all those with disabilities. Alternatives, Inc. also has the A.I.M Day Program in Raritan.

To be eligible to receive support services from Alternatives, Inc. you must be registered with the Division of Developmental Disabilities and have a Case Manager.

Program Descriptions

Group Homes - Clients require intensive levels of support with daily living tasks (medication administration, oversight of all health and wellness needs, household maintenance, cooking, money management, shopping, recreation and socialization, etc.) All group homes are licensed based on standards set forth by the Division of Developmental Disabilities. They are single-family homes in residential neighborhoods where staff ensures supervision/support 24 hours per day.

Emergency Capacity Systems Program - A unique program that provides temporary supports 24-hours per day for up to four people in crisis situations. Individuals are referred by the Division of Developmental Disabilities for immediate placement due to psychiatric issues, homelessness, abuse and neglect, etc. The program is designed to assess, monitor, stabilize, and transition people into permanent living situations. Staff is specially trained in behavior management techniques. Alternatives develops permanent housing and supports for some who transition from ECAP and are not placed with other agencies.

Supervised Apartments - Clients require a variety of supports at different levels. Supervised Apartments are licensed based on standards set forth by the Division of Developmental Disabilities. The majority are rentals in garden apartment settings throughout the Greater Central New Jersey communities. Staff is on-site 24 hours per day to provide support and supervision based on each person’s needs. Examples of supports offered are: medication administration/monitoring, promoting general health and wellness, apartment upkeep, meal planning/preparation, budgeting, shopping, transportation, recreation and socialization, etc.

Supportive Housing - Clients in this program have moved on from a more supervised environment and no longer require 24-hour supervision. Each client is involved in the hiring process of his/her own staff and is eligible to receive up to 20 hours of support per week through an individualized budget. Types of supports are chosen by the client based upon his/her needs and desires.

Supportive Living - Clients receive a range of 2 to 15 support hours per week. These services are tailored specifically to the needs of each person. The individuals in these programs, along with their interdisciplinary teams, decide whether their residences are licensed by the Division of Developmental Disabilities. SLP clients lease their own homes throughout the Greater Central New Jersey communities. Clients are responsible to pay their rent, utilities, food, and other living expenses. Staff provide clients with a variety of traditional and non-traditional supports that include: transportation, medical follow-up, budgeting, leisure planning, social networking, advocacy pertaining to legal matters and protecting entitlements, etc. People in the Supportive Living Program have access to a 24 hour, on-call system.

Parenting Program - This is the only residential program in New Jersey that supports parents with developmental disabilities and their children. Services are uniquely designed to transition families from intensive supports to more independent living. Staff’s role is to provide clients with the opportunity to learn and demonstrate effective parenting skills.

Clinical Services Department - Alternatives has a team of Counselors, Clinicians, and Behavior Analysts who work in tandem with each program of the agency to assist clients who have developmental disabilities and/or mental illness. The team is trained to recognize the clinical needs of the individual and provide treatment, stabilization, and maintenance that coincide with the person’s goals and the agency’s person-centered philosophy. Interventions include individualized supportive counseling, behavior management, advocacy and linkages to other resources.

A.I.M. Day Program
- We focus on a variety of teaching modalities to ensure that each participant is afforded the greatest opportunity to learn in a way that suits them best with a structured daily schedule that involves the iPad, Wii fitness, arts and crafts and music.  A.I.M. is a full inclusion program where people with all levels of abilities work together.  Clients work on life skills, pre-vocational skills and socialization.  We provide fun and engaging activities including arts and crafts, light exercise and cooking.  We go on community outings weekly.  The program plans to expand community access through volunteering and providing assistance with community projects and ultimately through employment for those who are able and interested.
