About Us:
1973 Seeking services for his son and finding very few options, Arthur Ritmaster established The Association for the Advancement of the Mentally Handicapped (AAMH) in Princeton.
1979 Branch offices were opened in Somerset and Union counties.
1979-1984 Operated a program called Community Alternative Living Support System (CALSS) where high functioning clients were deinstitutionalized and placed into their own apartments. This program developed into the current Independent Living Program.
1980 Became a separate agency in Somerset County.
1981-1986 Opened first Supervised Apartment Living Program.
Expanded services to Warren and Middlesex counties.
Expanded services to individuals who did not have a developmental disability through the Community Support Program (CSP).
Worked with the Division of Mental Retardation (now DDD) to develop and open our first Supportive Living Program.
Opened Residential Parenting Program (SAL IV).
1987-1988 Opened a regional office for Warren County in Phillipsburg, our first Transitional Housing program, the Plainsboro Supervised Apartment Living Program and Supportive Living Programs in Warren and Somerset Counties.
Opened Ringoes Group Home, a residence for individuals with both developmental disabilities and mental illness.
Opened Washington Group Home.
Developed Affordable Housing Project.
1989 The organization changed its name to Alternatives, Inc., An Association for Dignity through Independence.
1989-1992 Developed School-Based program.
Opened Franklin House and our second Transitional Housing program.
Developed another Supportive Living Program.

1993 ADTI Housing Corp. was formed
1993-1999 Opened another Supervised Apartment Living Program and expanded Franklin House.
Opened a Supportive Living program for parents with a developmental disablity.
Received Somerset County Coalition on Affordable Housing (SCCOAH) Excellence in Service Award.
Formed Quality Support Unit.
ADTI Housing Corp. purchases office building in Raritan.
Purchased first Permanent Housing program.
Opened HUD-811 homes in Somerville and South Bound Brook.
Established Employment Services Department.
Opened two HUD-811 homes in Somerset County.
Expanded Community Support Program.
Established a Consumer driven Quality Council.
Hurricane Floyd hits Central Jersey - Parenting Program, Bound Brook building gutted & re-built by Alternatives’ Facilities management staff.
Opened HUD 811 homes in Somerset & Warren counties.
2000-2004 ADTI Housing Corp. secures funding from DCA-DHS for Workfirst project & purchases 2-family home in Piscataway.
Established case management program for Franklin House graduates.
Opened Monmouth County program.
Purchased Belvidere Square Apartments, a 52-unit complex that provides affordable housing to income eligible tenants.
Developed a permanent housing program.
Clinical Dept. begins working in North Hunterdon & Vorhees High Schools.
Opened HUD-811 homes in North Plainfield, Bridgewater, Pohatcong and Lopatcong.
Alternatives secures CARF Accreditation for community employment services.
