Cultural Competency

“Culture” is a system of shared beliefs, values, customs, behaviors, thoughts, communications, actions, artifacts and institutions of a racial, ethnic, religious, sexual orientation or social group that evolves and is passed on from generation to generation.

“Cultural Competence” describes the ability of an individual or organization to interact effectively with people of different cultures.  To produce positive change, staff must understand the cultural context of the Alternatives community and have the willingness and skills to work within this context.

Alternatives, Inc. is committed to being a culturally competent service provider and employer.
