Primarily, Alternatives serves adults. For Alternatives’ mental health and homeless programs, the minimum age is 18.  For clients who are referred by the Division of Developmental Disabilities, the minimum age is 21. 

Alternatives offers: 

  • Supervised living programs throughout Warren, Hunterdon, Somerset, Middlesex, Ocean and Monmouth Counties.  
  • Day program services through Abilities in Motion (AIM), Raritan, Somerset County.  (Stay tuned for the opening of Alternatives’ newest day program, AIM II Ocean, located in Toms River, and for expansion of the AIM I day program located in Raritan!)
  • Support Coordination services in Morris, Union and Sussex Counties.

A severe, chronic physical and/or mental impairment that: manifests in the developmental years, before age 22 is life-long, and substantially limits the person in at least three of the following  life activities: self-care, learning, mobility, communication, self-direction, economic self sufficiency and the ability to live independently.

 Alternatives offers:

  • A variety of housing programs throughout Somerset County
  • Case management services, otherwise known as Community Support Services (CSS)

Individuals must have a mental health diagnosis, including but not limited to: Major Depressive Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, Schizoaffective Disorder, Mood Disorders, Anxiety Disorders or Schizophrenia.  If you have questions about your diagnosis, contact your mental health provider.

  • Case management services, otherwise known as Community Support Services (CSS)

  



Alternatives’ clients are referred by a number of sources including the NJ Division of Developmental Disabilities, Support Coordination Agencies, Somerset County Board of Social Services, hospitals, other community agencies and shelters, as well as family members and friends.

Alternatives programs are funded from a myriad of different sources including: Medicaid, the NJ Division of Mental Health and Addiction Services, NJ Dept. of Community Affairs – Division of Housing, US Dept. of Housing and Urban Development, Somerset County Board of Human Services, private contributions from corporations, foundations and individuals.
