Arin’s Story

At 41, Arin has been receiving CSS services from Alternatives for the past 1–2 years while living in her own home in Branchburg. Her journey has not been an easy one. After an abusive marriage and a difficult divorce, Arin became homeless for several months. She also faced serious challenges with her mental health, including bipolar disorder, anxiety, depression, and complex PTSD. In 2021, she went into a very dark place emotionally, and soon after her second ex-husband forced her out of their home.

Thanks to another service provider, Arin was able to move into an affordable housing unit in a new development, but when her case closed, she still needed ongoing support. That’s when Alternatives stepped in.

Arin describes Alternatives as a “lifesaver” and a “lifeline.” The staff help her with essential needs such as getting to the pharmacy, grocery store, or bank. Just as important, Alternatives staff Hannah and Heather provide encouragement and what she calls “mini therapy sessions” during their visits.

“I live alone, and you guys help me feel that I’m not alone. If something happens, I know I have support. With my past, that’s everything.”

Alternatives has also provided vital financial support. When Arin lost Medicaid and was faced with unaffordable co-pays, Alternatives stepped in and paid for her medications for two months, ensuring she didn’t go without care.

With therapy, medication, and the consistent support of Alternatives, Arin has stability and hope. “I don’t have to have an anxiety attack when something happens, because I’m not alone,” she says.
