Joseph's Story

Since joining Alternatives, Inc. in 2016 through our ECAP program and later moving into one of our Hunterdon County homes, Joseph Murphy has made remarkable progress toward greater independence. By learning more about his diagnoses, Joseph has developed strong self-awareness, enabling him to make healthier choices, manage challenges effectively, and continue building independent living skills. His determination and commitment to personal growth have transformed many of what were once daily struggles into meaningful successes.

Joseph stays active throughout the week by attending day program and working at a well-known local restaurant, where he is known as a kind, hardworking, and dependable employee. He enjoys shopping, dining out, spending time with his fiancé, fishing, birdwatching, drawing, watching movies, caring for his pet fish Simon, writing in his gratitude journal, and connecting with housemates and staff.

Looking ahead, Joseph hopes to earn a promotion at work and one day live in his own apartment near a lake where he can fish whenever he likes. His motivation, perseverance, and positive outlook continue to inspire those around him, demonstrating that determination—not disability—defines what is possible. We are incredibly proud of Joseph’s accomplishments and look forward to seeing him achieve his future goals.
