Paula’s Story
Paula has been part of the Alternatives, Inc. community for the past two years, living in an Independent Living home with two roommates. Before joining Alternatives, she spent three years with Easter Seals of New Jersey, but felt she was ready to take the next step toward independent living.
“I would like to share how wonderful my experience has been with Alternatives, Inc.,” Paula says. Paula describes her home with pride. The property is well maintained, the grounds are cared for, and safety is a priority with regular fire drills and appliance inspections. “I feel proud to call it my home,” she shares. “My room is spacious, and I even have a walk-in closet.”
The support Paula receives has been life-changing. Alternatives staff Heather, meets with her every month to review IMR (Illness Management and Recovery), which has helped her gain a better understanding of different mental health conditions. She also enjoys wellness activities like chair yoga and Tai Chi, and appreciates the guidance she’s received from Alternatives staff Hannah on making healthier choices through Keto meals.
Life at Alternatives also comes with community and celebration. Paula has taken part in events such as the Winter Awards Dinner, the office luncheon, and the annual summer cookout at Forest Lodge.
Outside of her daily activities, Paula enjoys playing games on her phone like Cryptogram, which share motivational quotes, as well as discovering new shows to watch. She also brings with her a rich background: She worked 35 as contractor office administration. Paula is a proud SAG-AFTRA member and worked 15 years as a tv extra, where she was in 21 tv shows and movies. She got her start at 7 years old on the kids show, Wonderama. She has also been a devoted caregiver to her mother after she suffered a stroke.
Reflecting on her journey, Paula is grateful for the encouragement of a dear friend who suggested she apply to Alternatives. Though she waited a year to join, she says it was well worth it.
