Chris’s Story

Chris’s story is one of resilience, purpose, and a deep commitment to helping others. Born under extremely challenging circumstances and not expected to survive into adulthood, he has defied the odds—one of his proudest accomplishments being earning a bachelor’s degree in Psychology. Today, he uses both his lived experience and education to support and inspire others.

After experiencing a disruption in services, Chris connected with Alternatives, where he received support in maintaining his housing and strengthening the daily living skills needed to remain independent. He shared how these services have provided not only practical support, but also structure, consistency, and something to look forward to each week—helping him continue to build a stable and meaningful life.

Chris is legally blind, with some color vision in his left eye, and has adapted in creative and resourceful ways. He enjoys movies—especially science fiction, comedy, and action—using audio description and screen magnification, and expresses his creativity through pencil drawing and painting.

A passionate communicator, Chris is actively involved in Toastmasters International and enjoys public speaking, particularly for nonprofit organizations. He has also volunteered within his county’s judiciary system. His professional background includes work as a sales representative with Merck & Co. through the New Jersey Association of the Deaf-Blind.

Chris describes himself as someone with a giving nature while learning the importance of balance and self-awareness. As he shares, “There are hard days. With those hard days, we have to remember the good days also… and give hope to those who have none.”

Chris approaches each day with determination and a desire to make a difference. Through his advocacy, creativity, and willingness to share his journey, he continues to inspire others.
